The Distance Between Us

The Distance Between Us is a book about Caymen Meyers and Xander Spence, two people from two very different worlds. Caymen is poor, and her life consists of helping her mother at their doll store, working in the doll store, and living in their tiny apartment . . . above the doll store. In the tiny town she lives in, she has become an expert on rich people. She has a general opinion of them and it isn’t a good one. But when Xander, son of the very rich and famous hotelier, walks into her life, she realizes she might be wrong. And so, the book follows the two as they navigate the differences of their worlds and, of course, fall in love.

SPOILERS BEYOND THE QUOTE

A lot of people don’t get my humor. My mom calls it dry humor. I think that means “not funny,” but it also means I’m the only one who ever knows it’s a joke.

As I was getting some information about the book, I saw that it was published in 2013. Six years ago. I just need a minute to let that sink in.

OKAY! So now that that’s over with, let me tell you about this book!

I really enjoyed The Distance Between Us. I love the “forbidden romance” trope, where one character can’t love another because of differences in socioeconomic status, disapproving parents, the princess/queen and general/guard, etc. It’s why I love These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly and why Romeo and Juliet didn’t suck as much as I thought it would.

This book didn’t quite go into that. It wasn’t the big obstacle that really kept the two from getting together. I didn’t feel its presence to be as important. Especially since she turned out to have rich grandparents who accepted her very quickly.

Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed the romance. Xander was so obviously in love with her, and she slowly let him in, but they both ended up becoming the other’s person and that’s beautiful. It never fails to make me happy, no matter how many times I read about two people falling in love.

The biggest thing I loved about The Distance Between Us is the mystery surrounding Caymen’s mother, past, the store, and everything we weren’t told until the end. It really kept me going and reading to find out more. I would’ve loved a little more “OMG WHAT” with the big revelation but it served its purpose.

So by no means is this the most powerful book ever, but it’s enjoyable enough that I couldn’t stop reading. If you’re up for a light hearted and quick read, The Distance Between Us is your friend!
