Author: Kasie West

Stand-alone or series: first book in a trilogy set in the same world

One of my least favourite tropes is the best friends turned to lovers. Especially when it starts off as unrequited love.

So it’s safe to say I didn’t enjoy the romance in this book. Oops.

SPOILERS BEYOND THE QUOTE

That we can only control ourselves. No matter how much we wish we could twist and bend someone’s will to ours, they have to want it too.

Let’s start by how much I didn’t like Cooper. And his family. His parents are such snobs, and if we’re being honest, Abby deserved much more than him.

I loved the talk of art in this book. I’m not an artist, not like Abby is. I can do photoshop and such, but to pick up a paintbrush and paint? A three year old would produce a better-looking piece than me. Nevertheless, I loved the scenes when Abby was in her bubble, painting and pushing herself.

Her self-doubt and “am I good enough”, “is it just my family”, “do I have what it takes” was well done in my opinion. I also struggle with thinking that I don’t have what it takes to make it, even with the support of my family because they’re my family and they might just being nice. And I’m glad Abby didn’t just become an overnight sensation, that she failed and picked herself up several times. It felt realistic and inspiring.

As I said before, I didn’t like the romance and I didn’t like Cooper. There’s nothing particularly wrong with him, but he didn’t click for me. I also really don’t like the best friends turned lovers trope.

So, unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this as much as I’d hoped. But that’s okay! I’m going to continue reading more Kasie West books and find another I’ll love in no time.
