He loved the idea of paper, how the ink would fade and the paper would age. So finite, he would explain, just like life.

I stumbled upon this book by accident while browsing the public library’s selection of available ebooks. I was trying to find something to occupy me while I waited for my holds to be ready (of course, half my holds all became ready hours within each other the next day). Nevertheless, this book is one of those unexpected gems that you find!
Ia Cōcha is a fearsome criminal that is hunted by the Commonwealth. When captured, she’s sent to a training camp with other Commonwealth citizens hoping to join the ranks of the RSF. There, she meets the intriguing flight master Knives, and her roommate with a secret, Brinn.
For some reason, I got major Tris and Four vibes from Ia and Knives at the beginning of the book—but that went away as the book crafted itself into a unique and singular story.
To start, I really enjoyed the concept of the story. I liked the themes that were discussed in the book, the general ~vibe~ of the story. I don’t often read sci-fi, and this story didn’t bombard me with too many technical explanations. The thing I enjoyed the most is the references to Ancient Earth. Some were pretty funny!
I liked the action of the book, and that final part had me on the edge of my seat. Even though I felt the plot twist coming, I was still surprised by parts of it.
The only thing that really let me down with this book is the relationships. It felt short for me. The foundation and ideas for some really great friendships and romance are there, but it was developed enough. I wished to see more conversations between characters, more emotion, more interactions . . . just more before they’re the best of friends or lovers.
All in all, this was a fun read and I look forward to the sequel!
Thank you for reading and see you next time ❤
