Well, sometimes the people we love the most can hurt us the most.

I read this book for a prompt from my Summer Reading Challenge, “Read a Book by a Black Author.” I’ve read and loved Let Me Hear a Rhyme and I’ve heard amazing things about the rest of Jackson’s books, so I wanted to read give this a try!

Just like Let Me Hear a Rhyme I couldn’t put this book down! It was really good, and I enjoyed it a lot.

This book is about Claudia as she navigates her best friend Monday’s disappearance. She tries to look for her even when she gets no help from those around her.

The cases of abused and missing girls is no surprise and are unfortunately many. They’re often ignored or excuses are made by people not wanting to get involved. We see all that in the book. People not wanting to get involved because “it’s family business.” Institutions that are supposed to work for the benefit of the people, for the kids in Monday’s position, failing time and again.

The conclusion to this story is not happy. It’s a tragedy as Monday is dead, killed by her own mother. Even though everyone associated with her is doing better, going to therapy, and healing. But Monday is still dead. A girl killed in the most brutal way by the person who’s supposed to love her the most.

This is a heavy book for sure. But there were light moments, seen in how Claudia learns to move past her bubble and meet new people like Megan and Michael.

The only thing that I didn’t like was the confusion I felt because of the timeline. “Before” “One year before the before” etc were fun but I also felt confused and mixed the timelines together. It all made sense in the end, though!

All in all this is a really great book that I recommend everyone who can to read.

Thank you for reading and see you next time ❤
