I absolutely love illustrated covers, and this one is no exception! I love all the details that appear when you look at closely at it. The title, too, is intriguing.
The Closest I’ve Come follows Marcos as he navigates a tough home life, from his emotionally absent mother and her abusive boyfriend, to a society that makes boys feel weak for wanting to talk about and feel emotions. But Marcos finds that maybe life can be different when he’s put in a special course that helps students reach their potential. There he meets Zach and Amy, and finds a new path to take in life.
I really liked Marcos’ character and the development he went through throughout the book. I liked how the book showed his earning for love and to feel emotions, to talk and cry and just be without being labeled a wuss or weak. I especially loved how he and his friends end up opening up for each other and being more honest and open with their feelings.
I’m usually a big romance reader and love a book for its romance. Even though this book lacked romance, I did not mind. It’s actually refreshing to see the main characters not get into a relationship and instead being rejected. I loved how Amy wants to focus on herself, and Marcos asks for time to get over her. I respect that.
I think the relationship between Marcos and his friends took the centre stage. To have a group of friends who care and show up for you is something to not take for granted. It’s a treasure and a rare gem, not everyone is lucky enough to experience that.
All in all this was an excellent book that I really enjoyed. I recommend to all!
Thank you for reading and see you next time ❤
