Hi everyone and welcome back to another week of Epic Epilogue! I can’t believe we’re already on week six, and that I managed to stick to a blogging series for longer than two weeks.
This week, we’ll be talking about some fantastic high fantasy books! We’ll start with one of my personal favourite . . .
We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

Inspired by Ancient Arabia, We Hunt the Flame offers a lush story set in a place where most high fantasy books don’t. The way cultural items and practices are effortlessly interwoven into the story gives ownvoices readers the chance to see themselves in books that often erase them. Too many books appropriate and use Middle Eastern culture as an aesthetic without giving it its proper due, but don’t worry with this one. The magic and world in We Hunt the Flame grips you in, and you will not want to leave.
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

I recently read Spin the Dawn and enjoyed it so much! A mixture of Mulan, Project Runaway, and Howl’s Moving Castle, this book packs so much inside its pages. Magic beyond belief that manifests in our protagonist creating beautiful dresses, which is a super creative way that I haven’t read before. Also, this book is pitched as Chinese inspired, and since I’m not Chinese I can’t speak to the rep in it. However, the rest of the book: writing, romance, plot, were all enjoyable and the ending leaves you wanting the second books as soon as possible.
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Last, but defiantly not least, Children of Blood and Bone is one of my favourite high fantasy books. Everything about this book from the characters, to the world, the writing, and the magic was amazing. If you haven’t read this book, you are seriously missing out. The magic system in this book is so intricate and layered, based on the Orisha. I can’t wait for the third book to come out!
Society has progressed past the need for the same old high fantasy books. We need more BIPOC authors to infuse their cultures and mythology into books and deliver a book that lets some see themselves, and others to be exposed to a whole new world.
Thank you for reading and see you next time!
