Epic Epilogue #7: Retellings

Hi everyone and welcome back to another week of Epic Epilogue! This week we’ll be talking about retellings.

Retellings are so fun, and I always like seeing how authors have kept the original story and changed it to fit into their world and characters. What makes retellings better?

When BIPOC authors get the chance to do it.

Here is one of my favourite retellings and one that I’m very excited to read!

First, a retelling of a beloved classic . . .

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

Pride and Prejudice is a beloved classic by Jane Austen. Indeed, it’s one of the few classics that I’ve read and actually enjoyed. So a retelling of this classic set in modern day Brooklyn, dealing with changing neighborhoods, but still with the beloved aspects of the original book? I was sold on this book and it ended up being so good! I really enjoyed and do recommend it!

These Violent Delights by Chloe Cho

Plenty of people are familiar with the story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The star-crossed lovers from feuding families whose love is destined to end in sadness and grief. Well, take this story and set it in 1920s Shanghai and you’ve got the idea for These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. This book is to be released in November, 2020, and I’m so excited for it! I fell in love with this book as soon as I read the synopsis, and this cover? Gorgeous. I have a feeling this might become a new favourite, and it defiantly is a unique retelling!

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh

A retelling of A Thousand and One Nights, this book is a rich story that keeps elements from the original while still managing to be a brand new and exciting story. Ahdieh has written other fantastic retellings including Flame in the Mist, which is a Mulan retelling. She isn’t a stranger to retellings, and proves that those classics are beloved for a reason. It’s defiantly one of my favourite books, and even though it has been out for awhile, it has aged finely!

What are some of your favourite retellings? Let’s discuss in the comments!

Thank you for reading, and see you next time ❤
