I had hesitated in reading this book, mainly because I couldn’t tell from the synopsis if there was going to be a lot of romance. I can’t remember why I finally decided to read it, but I did!

The beginning of this book was really good. It was an amazing start, and I was really enjoying it. I loved the atmosphere, the writing, the plot, world, characters . . . basically everything. There was a clear point to the story and I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

However, the plot fizzled to practically nothing in the second part. It was basically just a lot of musical descriptions and waiting for Elisabeth to die. There were no stakes and clear point, or something to look forward to happening like in the first half.

The relationship between Leisl and the Goblin King was interesting in the beginning, but I felt like it was lacking a lot of communications. I wanted more interactions between them and emotional connections.

There was a lot of musical talk that was interesting at the beginning, but by the end of the book I was tired of the millionth description of Leisl’s composition. I felt like it was very overdone.

Even though there was a lot of descriptions and the prose felt heavy to get through, it is very well written and pretty magical. The atmosphere and the world were magnificent and I did enjoy learning more about it. The flaws of human character that was shown is a nice change from the goody main characters you would expect sacrificing themselves to save the world. Leisl was a nice blend of human selfishness, selflessness, love and envy.

All in all, I recommend this book to people who love classical music and are eager to read luscious prose and slow paced books.

My final rating is:

Thank you for reading and see you next time ❤
