Is this supposed to be the sequel to American Royals or a completely new book?

I will admit that I was thrown by the direction this book took. I thought it was going in a certain way—almost convinced of my theories—but then I read this book and nothing is like expected.

I won’t spoil anything but for those who’ve read it: I think we all agree that we didn’t see all that coming.

It’s not necessarily bad! It’s different for sure, but it was well done so I didn’t hate it. It’s not the usual YA sequel, and I liked that Katharine McGee took this approach. I feel like she really gave her characters what they needed.

Speaking of characters, let’s talk about them. First up, Queen Beatrice. I really liked her character, maybe even more in this book than the previous one. She was more vulnerable but strong, and I loved that ending scene. I felt very proud and was cheering her on when she finally stood up for herself. While it was sad what happened in the romance department, I’m glad of the ending and who Beatrice ended up with. They’re so compatible and I think they work so well together!

Next, Samantha. I also really enjoyed Samantha’s character in this book and the character growth she went through. She realized things about herself and I just loved her romance story as well. [redacted] is such a sweet person, and they work so well together.

My girl Nina does not get enough page time, and it’s sad. She also doesn’t have the happiest of endings, so I’d like to imagine that she does end up happy eventually. She didn’t deserve all the trouble Daphne made her go through. The only thing the girl did wrong is fall in love 😦 She’s one of my favourites, and I wished there was more to her story because she’s awesome.

Daphne was very frustrating and I was very satisfied with the ending she got. It fits her very well, with her ambitions and plans and social climbing. I just hate that she ruined things for Nina. Hopefully now that she got what she wants, she’ll leave Nina alone to pursue her happily ever after without sabotaging it.

So while this book did feel like a stand-alone and completely removed from American Royals, I really enjoyed it and found myself reading and getting through it very quickly.

My final rating is:

Thank you for reading and see you next time ❤
